Cocomaro di Focomorto        Historical data on territory fractions

The name of such fraction goes back, as for Cocomaro di Cona, to "cuccuma" in other words: pot. The small village develops itself on the left embankment of Volano River and Guarini remembers that his ancient name was "Pumpkin Valley" and “Coccula Valley". The church of Cocomaro di Focomorto, whose we already have news since May 11th, 1141, was given by Grifone Bishop to the S. George canons. The church, destroyed in the 1642, was rebuilt later by the Olivetani monks and in 1790 the baroque bell tower was done again with the onion shaped dome. It was dedicated to S. Nicolò. Today we can find inside the church a done well statue of the century XVI. In the flourishing campaign of this fraction they can see as the rural settlement of middle Ferrara country had developed in the time: An example is "possessione" named S. Barbara whose three builders go back to 1785.

Cocomaro di Cona             Historical data on territory fractions

The name derives from "Cucumarious", ancient form of Cocumario, pot. The resort is better well-known as "Cocomarino" (little Cocomaro) whose adds the specification "di Cona" (of Cona), because was depending on that church. Sources of the built-up area are very ancient, probably going up again to before 1000 a.c.
The today's village is formed by a few houses risen in the ancient high-water bed of Volano River and along the right embankment of the river where, now, the road runs . The little church is dedicated to the "Assunzione"; at the times of Guarini it was entrusted to the S. George Olivetani monks and raised at parish in 1632. The interior was beautified a first time in 1760 and in 1763; while the elegant bell tower in his simplicity, goes up again to 1892. Once it was a palace called "la Camerina", of property of the Marquis of Verano da Camerino and, in succession, property of Strozzi family, Bentivoglio family and Lombardi family. Luxuriant orchards are in the countrysides. The country festival is on August 15th.

Once Padoa River was the main branch of Po River, but in the VII century a.c. it began its slow and uncontrollable extinction. A flood near Ferrara took to the birth of two new branches: Primaro Po and Volano Po. During the VII century a.c., Gaurus River, a branch of Volano which will be active for all the Middle Ages, developed. In the century IX the mouth of Gaurus hold the zone where town of Mesola is now; while towards South the consolidation of the coast cord from Massenzatica to the Delta Of Po di Volano stabilized. In XII century  Primaro and Volano, hanging rivers (see subsidence), caused frequent disastrous floods which culminated, in the 1152, with the large flood Of Ficarolo and the birth of the current main branch of Po. New watercourse, consequent to the flood of Ficarolo, determined in the centuries always smaller efficiency of the Po di Volano and Po di Primaro. The new Po di Ficarolo in the 1300's flowed close to Donada (near today's Rovigo) and began the formation of new mouth, that, in the centuries, will shape the modern Po mouth. Between the XIII and XVI century the "Po di Ariano", a branch of new "Po di Ficarolo" passing for Ariano (today Po di Goro), was articulated in two branches: that one properly said of Goro, towards north, and that one "dell'Abate" towards south, between which the island of Mesola was comprised. Cocomaro di Cona and Cocomaro di Focomorto are separated from the "Po di Volano" and they rise on the embankments of Volano River. They are connected by a one way Bailey Bridge.

Subsidence is the progressive lowering of the ground,  due to  natural factors or artificial factors as human activity. The natural subsidence is identified as a general process which determined millenary evolution of the eastern Po territory. It's not only caused from the spontaneous compaction (decrease of volume) of the inconsistent sediments (especially slimes, clays and peats) caused by the weight of the overhanging ones, but also from the movements of the rocky substratum. The natural subsidence caused, in the Po plain, the sinking of big amounts of materials, abreast with sedimentation, up to the formation of deposits of thousands meters of thickness. To not be forgotten, always as subsidence consequence, flooding by sea waters  of emerged territories with the formation of coastal ponds and lagoons (for example, Comacchio Valley). Phenomena of subsidence, also of remarkable entity, are to attribute at human activity: artificial subsidence.  They are hardly always extensive ground surface yieldings due to fluid or solid substances extraction from the subsoil; but it can be also becouse of the compressible layer compaction under strong and extensive load action. The artificial subsidence had remarkable effects in East Padania: permanent lowering of the phreatic surface, caused by the reclamation of the swampy grounds, by interventions connected to agriculture and phenomena of chemical alteration of underground waters, especially of the phreatic water. Sea erosion processes combined with the artificial subsidence and the river sedimentary crisis  had almost completely halted increasing of the Delta Of Po in the last forty years.
